Women in Evolution
As part of our commitment to society, the Institute of Evolutionary Biology (IBE, CISC-UPF) wants to give credit and visibility to the achievements of female scientists in evolution.
Every year, the IBE celebrates the 11 February (International Day of Women and Girls in Science), a date aimed at giving visibility to women in science and spreading research led by women to the younger ones.
Our activity so far includes thematic campaigns for social media, as well as visits to schools by IBE female researchers and also some special event, like movie projections with round tables or special symposiums with remarkable women in evolution.
Visit this link to get to know our latest campaign, "Close The Scissors".
#Close The Scissors
Women are the majority among scientific trainees, but leadership positions are mostly occupied by men. At IBE, we want to publicize this gender gap with the scissors graph, as a reminder that science needs us all. Let's evolve towards more diverse and egalitarian research. #CloseTheScissors.
Join the conversation for a more diverse and equal research community. #CloseTheScissors
#Diversity Promotes Excellence
#8M Campaign for Equality woth the book "An Inclusive Academy", which reflects the effects that demographic diversity has brought to science and innovation on a global scale.

#We Were There Too
Although the success of our species can only be explained from an inclusive perspective, women have been systematically underrepresented in the imaginary of human evolution. On the one hand, many fundamental activities for human survival, like labour, lactation, hunting and gathering or transmission of knowledge, have not left any fossil record and thus have been ignored. On the other hand, the human activities that have left fossil evidence have often been attributed to men by default.
Join the conversation to claim for more non-stereotypical representations of human history and evolution, as women were there too. #WeWereThereToo
#Who is your Shero?
With this campaign, we wanted to highlight that science is full of SHEroes whose passion, work and creativity inspired Evolutionary Biologists of today. To that aim, we shared stories of women who had an impact in our researchers' scientific career through our social media.
The community joined the conversation and also shared the women that inspired them under the hashtag #WhoisyourSHEro.
#Somcientífiques
In 2018, we devoted our social media campaign to our own crew of female researchers under the hashtag #somcientífiques.
You can find more about the campaign here, and also read the full conversation through facebook.
We have also joined other iniciatives, like the International Women Day, under the hashtag #balanceforbetter.
Projection of documentary Scientifilia and round table
The Institute of Evolutionary Biology (IBE, UPF-CSIC) together with the PRBB offered an event to all the community to a 1h15’ event that will include a short film session and a core subject discussion.
At 12h, the short documentary “Scientifilia” (25 min with credits, ESP with English subtitles) was screened. In the movie, the ins and outs of the scientific profession are shown through the eyes of four diverse scientists (both in gender and position) who are dedicated to research.
The short movie, which flows as a conversation, covers topics like the presence of women in the world of science, freedom in research, job insecurity or the uniqueness of the scientist job.
For the next 30 minutes, several female and male researchers from the different PRBB centers contributed to the debate on the topics covered at the film with gender perspective, with the aim of visualizing the gender gap in science as a real problem that competes us all.
29 May: Women in Evolution - New Gender Awareness Day
On May 29th of 2017 the IBE (CSIC-UPF) held, for the first time, a Gender Awareness day entitled "Women in Evolution", which mixed state of the art science made by highly recognized female scientist with a debate on gender bias in science.
The event gave the attendees the opportunity for deep thinking, for enlightenment and for debate on gender improvement policies with experts leading on the subject at organizations such as EMBO or in the major publishing companies such as Nature. See the whole program below.
The first 5 years of IBE Diversity Committee in a nutshell
The IBE Diversity Committee was created in the spring of 2015 with the philosophy that diversity enhances performance and creativity and it is therefore, desirable in any working environment. At IBE we endorse diversity in all aspects and we are actively working to increase it with specific actions, so far focused specially in increasing gender balance. Since its foundation, the Diversity Committee has worked to 1) disseminate the importance of diversity to the IBE community, 2) analyse the situation at IBE, and 3) propose specific measures to correct those tendencies that are negative.
After 5 years leading the IBE Diversity Committee, Elena Casacuberta and Iñaki Ruiz-Trillo handed over the baton to new IBE Principal Investigator Rosa Fernández having consolidated the project within the institution.
