Five female researchers of the IBE spread the word at schools: Science has no gender!

Laura Batlle, Erica Bianco, Sílvia Chafino, Lara Rubio and Alba Ventós and are visiting five educational centres of Barcelona to tell their students what their job involves and what inspired them to pursue a scientific career. These visits are organised in the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, February the 11th, and are aimed at giving visibility to women scientists to advance towards gender equality in science.

Only 18%, 8% and 2% of women finish a degree, a master’s degree and a PhD in science, while these numbers are 37%, 18% and 6% for men. In Spain, only 21% of the public universities’ professors are women, and a man with kids has 4 times more probability to become a professor than a woman under these circumstances. Such figures show that despite the efforts to achieve full and equal access of women to science, there is still a lot of work to do.

It is often said that to get more women in STEM, little girls need role models. With that goal in mind, five female researchers of the IBE ―Laura Batlle, Erica Bianco, Sílvia Chafino, Josefa Curz, Lara Rubio and Alba Ventós― are giving several talks in schools from February the 8th to the 14th on their experience as scientists. The schools they are visiting are Escola Pia de Sarrià, Escola La Mar Bella, Institut Juan Manuel Zafra, Institut-Escola Costa i Llobera, and Escola Pérez Iborra.

These talks are organised within the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, February the 11th, whose aim is to give visibility to women scientists and advance towards gender equality.
