Visit the Institute of Evolutionary Biology at the OpenPRBB 2024

As every year, the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB) opens its doors during the #OpenPRBB. This year's edition will take place on Saturday, October 5th, from 10:00 AM to 2:30 PM, where you will have the opportunity to explore the PRBB and its seven research centers, including the IBE, through various free science outreach activities for a wide range of audiences.

Explore the IBE at OpenPRBB 2024

Join the guided tours of the Comparative Genomics Laboratory and the Population Evolutionary Genetics Laboratory, plus an engaging workshop led by the Algorithms for Population Genomics group and a scientific talk by Victoria Shabardina. Dive into the groundbreaking science of the IBE!

Guided Tour of the Comparative Genomics Laboratory: Primate Geolocation with DNA Samples

Researchers from the group led by Tomàs Marquès-Bonet, Guillermo Carrillo, Lídia Altimiras, Lucas Wange, and Sara Gordillo from the Evolutionary Genomics group opens the doors of the BioEvo laboratory during the OpenPRBB. They will show how the geographical origin of an animal can be determined through its genetic material, a technique with major implications for the management and conservation of apes in Africa.
You will also see real primate samples collected non-invasively and feel part of a project with implications for bioconservation and human health.

Denisovans and Zinc Transport: An Evolutionary Puzzle

Discover how two groups from different PRBB centers collaborated thanks to a genetic variant involved in cellular zinc transport, which appeared more than 60,000 years ago in a group of archaic hominids closely related to Neanderthals.

The Evolutionary Population Genetics Lab, led by IBE principal investigator Elena Bosch participates in a joint visit with the group led by researcher Rubén Vicente from MELIS-UPF to showcase their research. Guided by IBE researchers Jorge García and Juan Carlos Guevara.

Thematic Tour – Duration: 60 minutes / Special schedules: 10:00, 10:30, 11:00, 12:00, 12:30, 1:00 PM.

Workshop: We Are What We Eat

Researchers from the Algorithms for Population Genomics group at IBE, led by Óscar Lao, Alba Nieto, Aris Jiménez, Carla Casanovas, and Fatemeh Omidi will offer a card game to understand how plants have been selected based on their most attractive genetic traits (size, taste, etc.). Want to play?
Sessions every 30 minutes. Minimum age: 8 years.

Scientific Talk: Small Organisms and Big Questions about Evolution

How did animals appear? Discover the strategies to study the secrets of our origins with Victoria Shabardina, a postdoctoral researcher in the Multicellgenome Lab at IBE.

"A major question in biology is how animals appeared. By comparing multicellular organisms with their unicellular cousins, we reconstruct their common ancestor and evolution. Although they are difficult to find, we have developed strategies to locate and study them in the laboratory, uncovering secrets about our origins", Victoria Shabardina says.

Register on the website https://openday.prbb.org for guided tours of the building in groups of 10 people, accompanied by researchers. The minimum age is 12 years. The younger ones (ages 6 to 12) can participate in a dynamic space with age-appropriate experiments.
